Mega Moolah

Mega Moolah – Massive jackpots

Mega Moolah

Mega Moolah is possibly one of the most well-known slot games around. This is the big one. This is the pokie that can, and does, deliver unbelievably big jackpots that change lives. This is crazy stuff. The largest jackpot of £13.2 million is actually recognised by the Guinness World Records as the biggest jackpot ever won on an online slot game. However, a win of €18.9 million in September 2018 has still to be ratified. A staggering $30M was won by players of the progressive jackpot wheel in 2018 alone. No wonder it’s called Mega Moolah.

The game is now twelve years old and comes out of Microgaming, who have been around since the mid-90s and are based on the beautiful Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. As a company, they are slick, professional and aspirational. You are in very safe hands with Microgaming.

Let’s talk about the game. It has the familiar five-reel and three-row playing format, with 25 potential winning paylines. You choose how many and which paylines you want to play with. The more you choose, the more you pay. But also, the greater your chances of winning. It’s worth bearing in mind that the more you bet, the better your chances of being selected to spin the jackpot wheel and have a crack at winning the millions on offer. More about that later.

The game’s theme is that of the African Safari, with amusing cartoon animal characters. There are Wilds and Scatters that can trigger free spins and bonuses.

However, what you are aiming for is a shot at the progressive jackpot, which can be won on the Jackpot Wheel.

The game can be played across multiple platforms – online in a browser, or by installing it on a Windows-based computer. There is no official Mega Moolah app. If you are offered a Mega Moolah app, just ignore it. The thing is, as long as your browser has no issues and is behaving well, playing through your preferred browser should be just fine.

There are three other, differently themed, Mega Moolah pokies – called American, Egyptian, and Holiday – but this is the original.

Game Theme

For this game, we are on Safari in Africa. Think of The Lion King, with lush vegetation and colourful sunsets as a backdrop. The cartoon animals give the game a quirky and fun feel, with a subtle soundtrack to add to the atmosphere. But let’s make no mistake. We are not here on some made up quest, we are here to win big. Potentially, VERY big.

Game Features

The game features Wilds (the lions), Scatters (the monkeys), Free Spins, and the potentially highly lucrative Jackpot Wheel, where the potential is to win millions.

Wild Symbols

Wilds are, rather appropriately, represented by the lions, which can substitute for every other symbol, except Scatters, to create winning paylines. If you make a winning line that includes the lion, your winnings will be doubled.

Scatter Symbols

Scatters are represented by the monkey symbols. When you land three of these across the reels you win fifteen free spins.

Free Spins

Fifteen Free Spins are awarded when you land three scatter symbols across the reels. The great news is that all your winnings from the free spins are tripled.

Jackpot Wheel

This is where the big money is. There are four progressive jackpots. The jackpots increase as bets are placed on the main game. Every time someone plays, a small amount of their bet is put into the jackpot. Because of the requirement to keep the jackpot fed, there are no free versions of Mega Moolah for you to play – understandably so.

Players are chosen at random to play the jackpot wheel. However, the formula for selection takes into account the amount that each player is betting. The bigger your bet in the main game, the greater your chances of being selected to play.

There are four, steadily increasing, progressive jackpots. They are referred to as the Mini, Minor, Major, and Mega jackpots. Each is assigned a colour and each has its own running jackpot, with Mini being the smallest and Mega the largest – which can run into millions of dollars.

The wheel is split into twenty segments, each coloured to match one of the jackpots. As you would expect, the bigger the jackpot, the fewer segments there are of that corresponding colour. Fair enough, I guess. The player spins and hopes to land on, preferably, the segment matching the colour of the Major or Mega jackpots. If you do, you win the jackpot.

Pay Table

The Pay Table can be viewed by selecting the “View Payout” button on the bottom left of the screen. This will take you to the Pay Table, which will not only tell you what each of the symbols is worth and how the Wilds and Scatters work, but will explain the jackpot wheel as well.

Symbol values for various animals are displayed, with the lion being of most value and the zebra least value. In addition to the animal symbols, the playing card symbols of ace, king, queen, jack and ten have the lowest values.

This is also where you can view and select the paylines you want to play with. Remember, the more paylines you play with, the more chance you have of winning. A piece of advice here is to bet low to start with, to get to know the game, and experiment with the paylines to see what combinations work for you. It’s not all luck.

The button that got you to the Pay Table now says “Back to Game”. By pressing it, you will be returned to the main game.

Jackpot Size

Mega Moolah has a progressive jackpot rather than a fixed jackpot. In fact, there are four concurrently running jackpots. At the time of writing this review, in April of 2019, there have been two multi-million dollar pay-outs so far this year. For the record, the maximum amount the jackpot has paid out to date is nearly €19M.

Minimum and Maximum Bets

The minimum bet is $0.02, while the maximum bet is only $6.25. However, because of the progressive jackpot, millions of dollars can be won with such modest bets.

Mega Moolah can be played across all platforms, from a desktop computer to smartphone. It’s worth noting that there are apps available for playing the game, although they are not, unfortunately, available on all platforms. Having said that, the game works just fine on a browser.

Wherever you have a reasonable internet connection, you can play – at your desk, on your sofa, on public transport, tucked up in bed, or in the bath.

This is a simple but incredible game. With the very real possibility of winning an absolute fortune, upwards of $10M, it’s no wonder that the appropriately named Mega Moolah is so popular around the World. The maximum wager is tiny at $6.25 when you consider the immense potential return. The game is easy to understand and fun to play. Any player would be crazy not to give it a go.
